Protecting Our Lands

The Land and Resources Department is dedicated to protecting, managing, and planning the use of Zagimē Anishinabēk’s lands. We safeguard the natural and cultural significance of our territories while supporting responsible growth and economic opportunity. Our role is to balance stewardship with development, ensuring that land decisions respect Treaty rights, traditional values, and the well-being of future generations.

Through careful planning, land-use management, and the enforcement of land laws, this department ensures that our resources are protected while being used in ways that sustain our community. We also support members with land-related services, including leasing, land code management, and guidance on resource use.

laws

First Nations Land Code

The First Nations Land Code provides Zagimē Anishinabēk with direct authority over its reserve lands and resources, removing them from the administrative control of the federal Indian Act. Through this framework, our Nation governs land use, environmental stewardship, and development in a way that reflects our values, traditions, and community priorities. By adopting our own Land Code, we ensure that decisions about our lands are made locally, by and for our people, creating opportunities for economic growth while protecting the environment for future generations.

Land Law

The Land Law service establishes and enforces the rules that guide how land is managed, protected, and developed within the Nation. These laws ensure that community values are reflected in land decisions, whether related to leasing, housing, commercial use, or cultural preservation. By combining traditional knowledge with modern governance, Land Law provides a framework that safeguards our rights, promotes responsible growth, and ensures that the benefits of the land are shared equitably among all members.
